One day, while walking in a park, Astrid Lindgren saw a little boy. Sad and lonely, he was sitting on a bench. This was enough for Astrid to create the story about Mio... Nadezhda Teffi (1876-1952), a Russian writer who had to leave Russia after the revolution of 1917. She died in Paris in 1952.
Here are two of her short stories translated into English.

He is very famous in France but not many people in other countries know him. Anyway, his song (and the music) from the movie "Emmanuelle" (1973) is more than famous even now.
